Prioritising Agriculture and its Research Needs

INTRODUCTION

The agricultural and allied sector carries immense importance for the Indian economy and at this time of Pandemic led economic crisis when most sectors of the economy are reported to be under significant stress, the agricultural sector continues to be promising and cushioning the economy.  There is a need to prioritise agricultural sector during this time to ensure speedy economic recovery of the country by focussing more on agricultural research.

ROLE OF AGRICLUTURAL RESEARCH

  • India got success in increasing its food grain output after independence.  
  • In 1950-51, food grain output was nearly 51 Million Tonnes (MT) which is now over 295 MT in 2019-20.
  • This was possible due to HYV seeds, improved irrigation facilities and fertilisers which were results of agricultural research and agricultural technology.
